The Clinical Simulation Center provides risk-free, hands-on educational programs. UMHS faculty and trainees use state-of-the-art simulators to learn the practice of medicine.

Introduction

In May 2014, the Department of Medical Education became the Department of Learning Health Sciences (DLHS). We are a basic science department focused on the learning sciences, applied to health, at all levels of scale. DLHS engages colleagues across the entire University of Michigan Health Sciences community, the state, the nation, and the globe. 

The department is organized into three sub-units:

  • The Division of Professional Education, which focuses on learning by individuals and teams (which may include individuals from multiple health professions);
  • The Clinical Simulation Center, which focuses on learning by individuals and teams in environments that model the real world of practice; and
  • The Division of Learning and Knowledge Systems, which focuses on learning at the organizational level (which may be a single hospital or a complex institution) and by ultra-large scale systems (which may span the state, nation, or world).

New publication: Learning and instruction: the world inside the head or the head inside the world?

Dr. Larry Gruppen recently co-authored this paper which was recently published in Medical Education. In it, he and his co-author, Steven Durning, discuss the importance of preparing physicians in training for taking responsibility for their on-going, self-regulated learning. Such learning depends on several factors, including the learning environment, assessment that facilitates learning, setting a high priority on learning, and skills related to effective learning in practice.
