About the Basic Sciences at U-M

Ever wonder how new treatments, drugs and technical advances happen? The answer often starts with basic science. Basic science researchers study the most fundamental elements of life - what makes a cell divide and conquer, the makeup of genes, the mysteries of DNA, and so much more - to advance existing scientific knowledge.

At the University of Michigan, scientists seek understanding of the origins of illness and disease. They work hard in all facets of science to move forward in ways that improve quality of life. That’s why organizations such as the National Institutes of Health heartily support our work. And why the Department of Energy, one of the principal federal sponsors of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States, supports many of our research projects.

At Michigan, basic science research begins with a spark, and often ends with discovery.
