J. David Blaha, MD

Professor Emeritus, Orthopaedic Surgery

Biography

Dr. Blaha attended medical school at the University of Michigan.  During his studies, Dr. Blaha earned the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor through the Medical Society.  Following medical school, he completed his orthopaedic surgery internship and residency at the University of Michigan and then completed a fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Arthritis Surgery at the London Hospital Medical College & Bone & Joint Research Unit. After the completion of his fellowship, Dr. Blaha joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor (1980-1983) in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at West Virginia University and went on to hold the following positions there:

  • Associate Professor (1983-1991)
  • Graduate Faculty (1989-2002)
  • Chief (1980-2002)
  • Chairman (1991-2002)
  • Resident Program Director (1991-2002)

In 2002, he joined the faculty at the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Systems in the Division of Adult Lower Extremity Reconstruction.  His research interests include primary and revision total lower extremity joint arthroplasty, knee kinematics, total knee arthroplasty design and function, total hip arthroplasty design and function, the biomechanical basis for implant osseointegration. Dr. Blaha is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is an active member in multiple societies including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Association, Mid-America Orthopaedic Association, Association for Bone and Joint Surgeons, Michigan Orthopaedic Society, Hip Society, Knee Society, Orthopaedic Research Society.
