Biography

Jon K. Sekiya received his undergraduate degree at the University of California – Davis prior to earning his medical degree at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, North Carolina.  He also attended Officer Indoctrination School in the US Department of Navy and graduated with distinction in 1994.  Jon completed his internship and residency under the guidance of Larry S. Matthews, MD, at the University of Michigan.  He then completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Center for Sports Medicine at University of Pittsburgh under Christopher D. Harner, MD.  He also did a two-week Mini-Fellowship in Hip Arthroscopy at Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail under Marc J. Philippon, MD. Dr. Sekiya began his career as Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Surgery at the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine for the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD.  He served as Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA, and was an attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at Fleet Hospital Fifteen in Kuwait during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.  After the Navy, Jon joined the staff at the Center for Sports Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh as an Assistant Professor from August 2005 to June 2007.  He then joined the staff at University of Michigan as an Associate Professor with tenure in July 2007.  Dr. Sekiya has earned honors both nationally and internationally, as well as in the military.  Honors include: AOSSM/ESSKA European Sports Medicine Traveling Fellowship in May 2006; Excellence in Research Award from the AOSSM, July 2010; Waldomar M. Roeser, MD Golden Scalpal (Surgical Teaching) Award given by Chief Residents, June 2009; Early Distinguished Career Award, University of Michigan Alumni Society, September 2009; Larry S. Matthews Collegiate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, May 2012.  He was also elected to the AOSSM Board of Directors in July 2012. Dr. Sekiya has authored or co-authored more than 300 journal publications, book chapters and abstracts/posters.  He has written 5 books, one of which has been translated into both Italian and Chinese editions, and is also in production of a 2nd edition.  He has been invited nationally and internationally for over 280 visiting professorships, seminars, exhibits, and extramural presentations.
