Dr. Hyzy is the Medical Director of the Critical Care Medicine Unit and Co-Chair of the Critical Care Committee at the University of Michigan Hospital. Dr. Hyzy graduated from Kenyon College and the NYU School of Medicine before moving to Michigan for his training in Internal Medicine as well as Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Hyzy's research interests focus in the intensive care unit including active studies in patients with the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, sepsis, and ICU delirium. In the Pulmonary Clinic he participates as a co-investigator in ongoing trials among patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and COPD.
Dr. Hyzy is an active clinician and researcher with multiple publications, including contributing 13 topics to the on line medical reference UpToDate.
Dr. Hyzy has won teaching awards from the Internal Medicine residents as well as the Pulmonary and Critical Care fellows. He is also the Medical Director of Amazon Promise, an Iquitos, Peru based NGO which provides free medical care to indigent residents of the Peruvian Amazon basin.
Areas of Interest
Dr. Hyzy is an experience Critical Care trialist who has successfully conducted research studies in the areas ARDS, ventilator associated pneumonia, sepsis and delirium. He has participated in several NIH sponsored critical care trials and was recently the PI of the Clinical Core of the NIH SCCOR in Acute Lung Injury at the University of Michigan. He has also be active in the MHA Keystone ICU Collaborative, a ground breaking intensive care unit quality improvement initiative.
Dr. Hyzy’s interests include the acute respiratory distress syndrome, mechanical ventilation, ventilator associated pneumonia and quality improvement in the intensive care unit. In the pulmonary clinic Dr. Hyzy’s interests include interstitial lung diseases, asthma and chronic cough.
