The goal of the Precision Health Graduate Certificate is to train a cadre of precision health scientists to apply cutting-edge, multidisciplinary knowledge in the pursuit of improving patient and population health. Designed for masters and doctoral students enrolled in degree-granting graduate programs at the University of Michigan, the Precision Health Graduate Certificate is approved by the Rackham School of Graduate Studies.

Students are encouraged to take classes outside their core degree program/department. Completion of the program is expected in 2-4 semesters and requires 12 total credit hours.

NOTE:

The certificate is open to all PhD, MS, MA, M. Engineering, and masters or doctoral level graduate students enrolled at the University of Michigan. In addition to Rackham graduate students, this includes students who are in graduate or professional degree programs not administered by Rackham such as an MPH, MSW, PharmD, DDS, JD, MBA just to name a few examples. Medical residents, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty are also welcome to apply.

The certificate requires:

  • A minimum of ten (10) graduate credit hours of coursework from at least two different precision health competency domains. An effort should be made to include all precision health domains (Discovery, Treatment, and Health.)
  • Participation in 8 Precision Health seminars(link is external)/departmental journal clubs/LHS Collaboratory events for a total of two (2) credit hours.
    • Submission of a 1-page, double-spaced reflection focused on comparing/contrasting the seminar topic to your interests in Precision Health.
  • Attendance at the Precision Health orientation session (1 hour).

Attendance at other non-credit, community-building activities, encouraged, but not required, such as meeting with other students at seminars in addition to guest speakers when available, networking with external advisory board at the annual Precision Health Symposium and other opportunities as they arise.

The Precision Health Graduate Certificate Program aims to provide core experiences in the three precision health domains (Discovery, Treatment and Health) and the following six competency domains:

  1. Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications of Precision Health
  2. Data Science and Predictive Health Analytics
  3. Biosocial Determinants of Health/Policy/Economics
  4. Human Genetics in Health and Disease/ Molecular Medicine
  5. Bioinformatics/Computational Genomics
  6. Consumer Health Informatics and Healthcare Systems Engineering for Precision Health
