Crash course: Student-led lay-first responder training scales up in Africa
A new hybrid training model developed with University support is helping to mitigate road traffic injuries in parts of Africa. Since launching LFR International several years ago, UMMS M3 Zach Eisner and former student Peter Delaney have trained thousands of first responders in Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and other countries with limited emergency medical response services.

Nitin B. Jain, M.B.B.S., M.S.P.H, appointed chair of Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Nitin B. Jain, M.B.B.S., M.S.P.H., has been appointed chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the James W. Rae Collegiate Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and a professor of orthopaedic surgery in the Medical School, effective February 12, 2024. The provost provided interim approval of this appointment, and it will be reported at the February Board of Regents meeting.

Ophthalmologist and comedian William E. Flanary, M.D., will deliver the 2024 Medical School Commencement address. The ceremony will be 4-6 p.m. on May 10 in Hill Auditorium.

Dee E. Fenner, M.D., to receive award for advancing women in academic medicine
Dee E. Fenner, M.D., is being recognized by the Medical School as the 2024 recipient of the Karin Muraszko, MD, Advancing Women in Academic Medicine Award. Fenner, who has served since 2018 as chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Bates Professor of Diseases of Women and Children, will be honored at the second annual Celebration of Women in Academic Medicine at 2 p.m. February 28, 2024, at the D. Dan and Betty Kahn Auditorium in the A. Alfred Taubman Biomedical Science Research Building.

Kahli Zietlow, MD: Building interprofessional teams
Kahli Zietlow, MD, is a clinical assistant professor of internal medicine who specializes in geriatric medicine. Originally from Michigan, she earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan before attending Duke University, where she earned her medical degree and completed her residency and fellowship. Dr. Zietlow returned to U-M in 2020 and is currently the interim director of Interprofessional Education (IPE) at UMMS and the associate program director of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship. She is passionate about IPE, geriatric medicine and medical education. Read on to learn more about Dr. Zietlow, including her talent as a wildlife photographer!

Alli Ruff, MD, MHPE: Helping students succeed
Alli Ruff, MD, MHPE is a clinical associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. Originally from Florida, she came to Michigan after earning her MD from the University of Miami and completing an internal medicine residency at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Alicia Jacobson: Hitting the ground running
U-M Medical School M3 Alicia Jacobson grew up in Newton, MA, and graduated from University of Maryland in 2014. She spent the intervening years focused on outdoor education in Nepal, Australia and New England, which illuminated a passion for reducing barriers to health care and improving quality of life.
