Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM)

White Mouse Observed by Researcher

ULAM is a unit of the Office of Research, and features both academic and service programs. A key responsibility of ULAM is to provide guidance for the University’s animal care and use program campus-wide.  To achieve this, our staff and faculty furnish the biomedical research community with a variety of services including laboratory animal procurement and care; veterinary care; compliance oversight and monitoring; personnel training; and specialized research support cores and activities.

ULAM also has academic teaching and research programs.  Our faculty provides postdoctoral residency training for veterinarians seeking specialization in laboratory animal medicine and we offer externships and summer fellowships for veterinary students exploring careers in laboratory animal medicine and biomedical research.  Our faculty conducts basic research, primarily in host-pathogen interactions, and clinical research on the biology and diseases of laboratory animals and the impact of common laboratory environmental parameters on animal physiology and behavior.  Members of our faculty with expertise in veterinary pathology offer collaborative research support to other institutional scientists.
