Plentiful Possibilities

As an interdisciplinary gateway, the Program in Biomedical Sciences (PIBS) at Michigan gives you access to 14 Ph.D. programs through one application. Students rotate in labs of their choice throughout the first year to discover an ideal mentor and project match—for some, this exploration even leads to a completely different research area than originally planned!

Consistent Funding

Our School consistently ranks among the top institutions, most recently ranking #8 among primary care, #12 among research medical schools (U.S. News & World Report, 2015) and #11 in NIH funding. In 2013, Medical School researchers brought in grants and awards from the NIH and other sources totaling almost $470 million – nearly half of U-M’s total research spending.

Research for All

Diversity among our scientists and the projects they pursue is part of our core mission. We are dedicated to creating an inclusive learning environment that supports all of our students. With input from scientists who come from all walks of life, we are better able to pursue answers that will help people no matter who they are or where they live.

Knowledge Empowered

Our mentors were once like you—and they are passionate about guiding you where you want to go. They are among the pioneers of many biomedical fields, including leaders of the first Pharmacology, Neuroscience and Human Genetics programs in the country. Whether you’re designing a study, learning a technique or preparing to publish, our faculty mentors are there to help you every step of the way.

Good Company

Our labs are all within walking distance to top-rated professional schools and an internationally recognized health system, which goes a long way toward facilitating collaboration among students, researchers, clinicians and educators. This proximity makes it convenient to complete a dual degree or certificate from a number of Rackham Graduate School programs, including Public Policy and Entrepreneurship.
