Dr. Allison Janda is a cardiothoracic anesthesiologist and researcher interested in studying outcomes after cardiac and major non-cardiac surgery, as well as how intraoperative practice variation impacts outcomes, the patient experience and cost after surgery. She works with the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG), an international consortium of perioperative databases coordinated at the University of Michigan, to perform retrospective observational studies pertaining to her interests in perioperative outcomes. Additionally, she aims to apply the resources of the MPOG database to aid in the development of pragmatic clinical trials to study intraoperative care, postoperative complications, cost and patient-centered outcomes.

Dr. Janda has research interests in evaluating outcomes after cardiac and major non-cardiac surgery, assessing variation of intraoperative management decisions and the impact on cost and patient outcomes. I am currently working on studies employing clinical informatics specifically assessing the association of initiation of inotropic therapies or selection of vasopressor therapies on postoperative outcomes. The majority of these projects are retrospective observational studies, but I am in the process of developing a pragmatic randomized crossover clinical trial to assess the impact of phenylephrine versus norepinephrine in those undergoing surgery on postoperative outcomes using a multicenter perioperative electronic health record database as a platform for data collection. I aim to provide insight into vasopressor selection and the decision to initiate various therapies, including inotropes, in the non-cardiac and cardiac surgical populations by applying clinical informatics skills to large perioperative databases. Additionally, to merge these clinical interests within cardiothoracic anesthesiology with my interest in health economics and undergraduate Economics degree, I am working on projects using administrative health data across the state of Michigan to assist in the identification of readmissions and postoperative complications and study how they relate to cost and patient-centered outcomes to shed light on the impact of common postoperative complications, the factors associated with these complications from an anesthesiologist's perspective, and ultimately improve care.
