    Research Overview

Duan’s research centers on brain dynamics, consciousness, and anesthesia. Specifically, a major focus of her work is on the development of electrophysiological signal analysis methods to study the brain dynamics and attempt to understand the neural mechanisms of altered states of consciousness, such as anesthesia, sleep, and psychedelic states. Duan is also interested in investigating the effect of general anesthesia on the developing and aging brain. The incorporation of such understanding could help improve the brain monitoring algorithms currently in use and drive the development of better monitoring system for anesthesia.
