Katherine (McKeon) Risko, MD

Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine

Shivani Singh, MD

Hometown: Saint Louis, Missouri

Undergraduate School: Saint Louis University
Medical School: Saint Louis University School of Medicine

Why I chose U-M Anesthesiology: I was looking for a program that offered comprehensive training — with clinical complexity ranging from liver transplantation to pediatric cardiothoracic surgery — and a supportive learning environment. As one of the largest clinical complexes in Michigan, we participate in novel, first-of-their-kind procedures alongside exceptional faculty and residents from other specialties. Additionally, since our surgical catchment area is outside the range of other large academic institutions, we are exposed to a wide array of anesthetic options and patient conditions. For these reasons and more, I chose to complete my anesthesiology residency at the University of Michigan.

Hobbies: Spending time with friends/family/my clingy cats — but also ballroom dancing, playing board games, listening to NPR, and finding the best spot for a good meal/drink/espresso
Favorite Ann Arbor restaurant: Breakfast at Jefferson Market, lunch/drinks at Rappourt, or dinner at the Boro
Favorite thing about life in Ann Arbor: 1) My co-residents — I will miss them all dearly at the end of these 4 years! 2) See food recommendations above.

Boston University
Medical School: Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine

Why I chose U-M Anesthesiology: The people. While completing my away rotation here during medical school, I felt a sense of comfort and belonging. I was pleasantly surprised that everyone preferred to be called by their first name, and rarely did I sense any power differentials between myself, residents, or faculty. But I did see the hierarchy in action during complex cases and emergent situations, which seemed very natural to all of them. I was so impressed with what these people were able to do and how complex the cases were. And the admin staff were all so welcoming and down-to-earth. Reflecting on that rotation, I knew I found my people and I would get some of the best anesthesiology training in the country.

I also couples'-matched with my wife (a neurology resident). U-M was one of the few programs that made a concerted effort to communicate with the other department. I could tell they cared about their residents' happiness and ability to have a (semi) normal existence — which was a huge thing for me!

Hobbies: Plane spotting, architectural photography, road trips, international travel, cooking (sometimes weird things — I loved "Chopped"), swimming, surfing
Favorite Ann Arbor restaurant: Lan City Hand Pulled Noodle
Favorite thing about life in Ann Arbor: Everyone here is very outdoorsy — willing to kayak, float down the river with friends, bike a new trail, or go for an interesting nature hike. There's tons to do here!

Favorite Ann Arbor restaurant: The Boro
Favorite thing about life in Ann Arbor: The summers! The outdoors in Ann Arbor are incredible. I am always blown away by the wildlife and places to explore... and the fact that it isn't a million degrees outside.
