Why I chose U-M Anesthesiology: I watched the U-M anesthesia residents for four years while I completed EM training and saw firsthand how well-trained and capable they are in handling the large variety of surgical cases and applying the principles required to be competent in anesthesia and providing excellent patient care, validating to me the reputation this program has earned and wanting to stay here for a second residency. Ann Arbor has become my home and this department appreciates wellness and tries to balance work and the remainder of life. Lastly, residency is tough and demanding; through it all, most residents here are happy they chose to train at U-M.
Hobbies: Lifting, playing guitar, anything involving tools, traveling, and, most importantly, spending time with my family
Favorite Ann Arbor restaurant: Lan City - Ypsilanti
Favorite thing about life in Ann Arbor: How in a time when people don't know their neighbors, this city embraces inclusion and openness. The street my family and I live on is an epitome of this. We all know each other and support each other when there is a need, we have block parties and "Shiner Bock Happy Hour" were we grab lawn chairs, sit in a driveway, order delivery for dinner, drink beers, and enjoy each other's company.

Why I chose U-M Anesthesiology: I chose University of Michigan because of the community. The attendings and everyone else I've met with the anesthesia department have been extremely welcoming since my first year of medical school. It really showed me that Michigan Anesthesia was not only just talking about diversity, but also dedicated to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all people.

Victor Lin, DO/PhD
Undergraduate School: Washington University in St. Louis
Graduate School: Drexel University College of Medicine & UNT Health Science Center – Ft Worth
Medical School: UNT Health Science Center – Ft Worth
Why I chose U-M Anesthesiology: I realized that I could get great anesthesiology training at many institutions in the country. I could also make friends and have fun in most places I interviewed at around the country. However, only at U-M could I 1) get great anesthesiology training, with the complexity and diversity of cases I wanted, 2) be able really enjoy my surroundings (love the wooded-ness of Ann Arbor/Michigan), and 3) have the opportunity to participate in the highest level of research of any training programs (#1 in NIH funding for the 6th straight year, baby!). Do all that in one location, Hot Dawg!! And even though interviews were virtual, I could really feel the sincerity and the emphasis U-M Anes faculty place on mentorship by the way they interacted with me during and after my interviews. The House Officer Association going to bat for you in securing a rewarding annual salary + yearly lump sum payments don’t hurt the pocket books either. Work hard, play hard, and get paid well while doing it.
Hobbies: Spending time with my wife and our 18-month-old, photography, tennis, thinking about the next “invention,” international/domestic travel, biking, running, and snowboarding ... if our son allows us the trip to the Upper Peninsula, which I hope he will in due time!
Favorite Ann Arbor restaurant: Frita Batidos – can’t go wrong with Cuban + burgers!
Favorite thing about life in Ann Arbor: It’s a mix of West Coast nature (think Pacific NW), laidback Midwestern personalities, the college town feels, and a load of parks all throughout Ann Arbor (161 to be exact. Pretty much a park within a 5-10 minute drive no matter where you live). If you want a mix of it all, come join us. There’s even kayaking and tubing down the Huron River next to U-M.

Lindsay Newton, MD
Undergraduate School: Dartmouth College

Why I chose U-M Anesthesiology: My partner and I couples matched (he is an IR resident), so it was very important to us to find a place that not only had exceptional and well-rounded training in both of our specialties, but also a place where we would be happy to live for 6+ years. Michigan offered a really amazing clinical experience where we would see just about everything, a fun, manageable, and dog-friendly city, and really kind and thoughtful people who we were fortunate to meet while interviewing. It was also one of only two programs we interviewed that was categorical for both of us, so that sealed the deal!
Hobbies: Hiking, biking, skiing, baking, knitting, reading, and being on the water in any capacity (whether on a boat in the Atlantic Ocean or a tube in the Huron River!)
Favorite Ann Arbor restaurant: Jefferson Market
Favorite thing about life in Ann Arbor: I love that I can live in a house with a yard in a quiet neighborhood, bike to work safely in ten minutes via a two-lane bike road, and have easy access to all kinds of awesome restaurants, coffee shops, breweries and bars, and beautiful parks within and nearby the city. Despite having lived in a different region of the country for my entire life and never having been to the state of Michigan before matching here, I felt at home really quickly in Ann Arbor because it is such an easy place to live.

Why I chose U-M Anesthesiology: I fell in love with the faculty during my virtual away rotation. They were so caring and I learned more about anesthesiology in those few weeks than I had in my entire medical school career. It didn't seem like there was any competition and everyone was friends, I loved it!
