We recognize the importance and need for a strong Wellness Program for both our residents and their support systems. With a newly formed Wellness Committee consisting of residents, faculty, and department administration, we have launched a wellness curriculum for our interns that continues through all 3 categorical years of anesthesia training. Monthly tutorials are held intern year to discuss and reflect on topics such as fatigue mitigation, suicide awareness, and mindfulness. These topics are then reinforced through quarterly meetings throughout the remainder of training. In addition, we provide our residents with a variety of department-sponsored activities throughout the year to promote a healthy work-life balance. Events tend to be once a month, and are highly enjoyed and anticipated. Some activities are team building, while others are for relaxing. Activities include team building, health and fitness, and relaxation and socializing. Past resident outings include:
This is where the incoming and outgoing intern classes meet. This barbecue is in June at Dr. Emily People's (Internship Director) house. We enjoy a great catered meal, swimming, and good conversation. It is a great initial opportunity for our new collogues to meet and learn from their fellow residents.
8-9 Recruitment Dinners
Our residents are a big part of our recruitment. Not only are they a part of interviewing, tours, and chatting with the applicants in between interviews, but they are also invited to the recruitment dinners. Current residents look forward to these events to not only spend time with their friends, but also to begin to form relationships with each potential new member of the team!
Resident and Faculty Soccer and Kickball
The Hemoglobin Trotters kickball team plays during the summer-athletic talent not required! Playing with the "Soccuroniums" is a great way to get exercise while hanging out with fellow anesthesia residents, staff, and CRNAs. The anesthesia department is generous enough to sponsor a team year round, which is especially nice in the winter. The games are on Sundays, so after intern year is over you can make most games. If you love soccer, getting to play with your friends so frequently is a real treat.
Anesthesiology Holiday Party
Highly anticipated, and very well attended holiday party in the historical Michigan Union. Cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, string quartet and a DJ are provided, as this party does not end until 1 AM.
University of Michigan Football Tailgate
Each fall, the Department provides a catered tailgate at one of the University of Michigan's home games. This is a great way to feel like a part of the famous Wolverine family! Go Blue!
4th of July Party
Another annual party at Dr. Kevin Tremper's house. Food, friends, fireworks, pool and volleyball, as well as other activities.
Boxing, yoga, and more!
Our residents participate in group boxing classes, private yoga instruction, and team runs including the Detroit International marathon! An annual ice-skating event is held in Michigan’s Yost Ice arena, home of Michigan’s hockey team. The Huron River provides the perfect setting for kayaking and tubing on hot Ann Arbor days. Regardless of the season, our residents find ways to stay active and well.
