Cancer Biology Curriculum

Coursework

The Cancer Biology graduate program requires all of the following courses:

  • CancBio 800: Cancer Biology Student Seminar (Fall and Winter semesters of Year 1; 1 credit per semester)*
  • CancBio 554: The Science of Cancer (Winter semester of Year 1; 4 credits)
  • Bioinf 524: Foundations for Bioinformatics (Winter semester of year 1; 3 credits)

*While students will only formally register for CancBio 800 in their first year, students must participate and attend the course each term and present in the course once an academic year until they successfully defend.

Year One:

Fall Semester

    • PIBS 503: Research Responsibility & Ethics (1 credit)
    • PIBS 601: Research Lab Rotation I (2 credits) 
    • PIBS 602: Research Lab Rotation II (2 credits)
    • PIBS 800: PIBS Success Seminar (1 credit)
    • CancBio 800: Cancer Biology Student Seminar Series (1 credit)
    • Relevant Electives - Students should take relevant electives based on their areas of interest.
      • Note - students should consult with member(s) of the Cancer Biology Program Leadership Team on appropriate elective selection

Total credits: minimum of 9

Winter Semester

    • Bioinf 524: Foundations for Bioinformatics (3 credits)
    • CancBio 554: The Science of Cancer (4 credits)
    • CancBio 800: Cancer Biology Student Seminar Series (1 credit)
    • PIBS 603: Research Lab Rotation III (2 credits) 
    • PIBS 604: Research Lab Rotation IV (2 credits)*
    • PIBS 800: PIBS Success Seminar (1 credit)

*If needed (permission required)

Total credits: minimum of 9

Year Two+

Fall Semester

    • CancBio 995: Candidacy Dissertation Research (8 credits)
    • Elective course(s)**
      • Students are encouraged to take Phrmacol 502: Introduction to Scientific Communication (2 credits) in the Fall semester of their 2nd year in advance of preliminary checkpoint 2

Winter Semester

    • CancBio 995: Candidacy Dissertation Research (8 credits)
    • Elective course(s)**

Students are only required to register for Cancer Biology 800 during the fall and winter terms of Year 1. However, they must participate and attend each term and present once an academic term until they successfully defend. Please note that Cancer Biology students must register for their mentor’s section of Cancer Biology 995 (candidate) each Fall and Winter term until they successfully defend.

**Students should consult both their PI and review Rackham's Candidacy Registration Policies when planning their course schedule each semester.
