University of Michigan
Department of Cardiac Surgery
Welcome from the Chairman,
The Department of Cardiac Surgery announced on Feb. 19, 2018 that Edward L. Bove, M.D., had stepped down as chair of the Department of Cardiac Surgery after over 30 years in dedicated leadership to Michigan Medicine including 6 years as Department Chair. With his transition, Dr. Bove will continue his surgical practice in pediatric cardiovascular surgery at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital Congenital Heart Center. Dr. Bove became the inaugural chair of the department in 2012 after various leadership roles in Cardiac Surgery including the Division Director for Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery and Head of the Section of Cardiac Surgery. Under his leadership, he elevated Cardiac Surgery from a division to a department, and facilitated substantial growth in all clinical areas. He also launched robust research programs in stem cell and outcomes research, and established an integrated six-year residency program. The department is also recognized for its nationally and internationally renowned faculty, including Dr. Bove’s work pioneering heart surgery for children with congenital heart disease. On behalf of Michigan Medicine and the Department of Cardiac Surgery, we sincerely thank Dr. Bove for his dedication and years of invaluable service as chair.
As we prepare to launch our search for a permanent replacement, Richard L Prager, M.D., has been appointed interim chair for the Department of Cardiac Surgery. Dr. Prager has served as a director of the Frankel Cardiovascular Center since 2003 and was program director of the Cardiothoracic Residency Program from 2009 to 2015. He is past president of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and now serves on the executive committee and board of directors of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. His research focuses on acquired heart disease, health outcomes research, patient safety, organizational efficiencies and education.
Dr. Prager received his M.D. from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center. After completing a general surgery and thoracic residency at the University of Michigan in 1978, he joined Vanderbilt University as an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Prager returned to Ann Arbor to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in late 1983 and led their program until moving to the University in July of 1999 as a Professor and head of adult cardiac surgery.
Please join us in thanking Dr. Bove for his years of service and the many accomplishments of the department during his tenure, and welcoming Dr. Prager to his interim chair position.
