Family Support

Social Work

The social workers for the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery service assist families with lodging, meals, insurance issues and local resources. Families will meet with a social worker shortly after arriving to the University.

Child Life

Child Life Specialists are available to provide activities for children while they are hospitalized. They organize unit activities, birthday parties and staff the play room on the general care floor. They are also involved in preparing children for surgery, practicing distraction from painful procedures and act as a wonderful friend to the patients!

Survival Flight

The University of Michigan has a full-service emergency transport program called Survival Flight. This includes helicopters and a fixed wing plane. They make certain that patients from distant destinations receive prompt, safe transport to our institution.

Current Research

The pediatric surgeons at the University of Michigan are at the cutting edge of new technology and new procedures while being involved with numerous research projects aimed at increasingly better patient outcomes. Families may be asked on behalf of their child to be a part of certain research projects while their child is in our care.
