Guest Speakers David Kern, MD of Johns Hopkins University and Sara Kim, PhD from the University of Washington featured at Virtual Grand Rounds hosted by the Clinical Simulation Center

Please join us for the upcoming American College of Surgeons Accredited Education Institutes (ACS AEI’s) Virtual Grand Rounds (VGR), titled, ‘Let’s talk! Insights on Effective Communication with Patients and Peers” presented by the ACS AEI VGR Program Committee. We are excited to have guest speakers, Drs. David Kern and Sara Kim discuss their perspectives on improving communication with patients and peers, including conflict resolution. Please see their bios below.

David Kern (Johns Hopkins University)

Dr. David Kern served for 25 years as Co-Director then Director of the Division of General Internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, and was instrumental in developing the Johns Hopkins GIM Residency Program, the Johns Hopkins Faculty Development Program for Clinician-Educators, and the medical education track of the Johns Hopkins fellowship program in General Internal Medicine.  He has served on the Board of Directors of the Academy of Communication in Healthcare since 2013 and was its President in 2015. His publications focus on medical education, curriculum development, communication skills and psychosocial medicine, professional growth, and ambulatory practice. They include the book, Curriculum Development for Medical Education: a Six-Step Approach, which has become a standard reference for curriculum development in medical education.

 

Sara Kim (University of Washington)

Dr. Sara Kim, Research Professor of Surgery, received her PhD in Education in 1999 from University of Washington, Seattle, Washington. Currently, she serves as Associate Dean for Educational Quality Improvement, School of Medicine, University of Washington. She is the LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education) Faculty Accreditation Lead, overseeing the medical school’s continuous quality improvement covering both operational and educational content areas. 

Dr. Kim is the inaugural holder of the George G. B. Bilsten Professorship in the Art of Communication with Peers and Patients.  She actively leads research programs in conflict management and collaborates with a wide range of clinical, administrative and educational stakeholders across UW Medicine. Since 2014, she has developed training programs and taught over 3,000 healthcare professionals communication skills associated with conflict management and resolution. Her work has been primarily supported through the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine grants as well as the UW Medicine Patient Safety Innovation Programs (PSIP). 

She has numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading medical education and medical specialty journals, covering topics of physician communication skills, assessment, teaching and learning practices. Previously, Dr. Kim served on the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) Research in Medical Education (RIME) Committee and is currently a review board member for the journal, Teaching and Learning in Medicine. 

 

This AEI VGR is intended to serve as a conduit that allows ALL members of an institute (e.g. technicians, interns, administrators, educators, clinicians, researchers, and innovators) to network with colleagues at their own institution and connect virtually with other AEIs to facilitate continued discussions.
