Injectable Fillers

Fillers are injected through an ultra-fine needle beneath the surface of the skin, under wrinkles, scars, or areas of volume loss. They correct textural irregularities partly by plumping and smoothing out the skin. The filler acts to restore volume and fullness to the skin, thereby softening and improving its appearance. Beyond treating individual wrinkles, injectable fillers are now used to broadly add back volume to areas of the face where fat content has been lost over time. Many patients experience a flattening of their cheeks and other areas of the face as they age. Fillers may be used to restore a more youthful appearance to the skin by structurally supporting the skin and adding volume back where it has been lost.

JUVEDERM® Ultra, JUVEDERM® Ultra Plus, JUVEDERM VOLBELLA®, Restylane®, Restylane® Lyft

JUVEDERM® Ultra, JUVEDERM® Ultra Plus, JUVEDERM VOLBELLA®, Restylane®, and Restylane® Lyft are stabilized forms of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring molecule found in all human skin. These fillers are used in the correction of lines, wrinkles and folds of the facial skin and may be used to improve the appearance of certain types of depressed scars. These proven non-allergenic, natural cosmetic dermal fillers are used for cosmetic purposes to restore volume and fullness to the skin, thereby improving its appearance. Injectable fillers are also often used to enhance the appearance of the lips. By plumping the lips, the filler may restore the original fullness to lips that have become thinner over time. This may be done in a very natural appearing way when performed by an experienced physician.

In a seminal research study conducted by the Cosmetic Dermatology & Laser Center, we were able to demonstrate that having hyaluronic acid fillers injected into the skin also promotes the formation of new collagen. For this reason, even once the filler has been gradually broken down by the skin’s enzymes many months after treatment, patients may still enjoy improvements in the appearance of their skin based on the production of collagen during this time. For this reason, it is not uncommon for patients to eventually require smaller amounts filler, injected less often to achieve their aesthetic goals.

JUVEDERM VOLUMA®

JUVEDERM VOLUMA® is specifically FDA-approved for the correction of age-related volume loss in the middle of the face. Like several of the other fillers used in the Cosmetic Dermatology & Laser Center, Voluma is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring molecule found in all human skin. However, due to the way in which it is made, Voluma lasts significantly longer—up to two years! Many patients continue to enjoy a rejuvenated appearance following Voluma injections for even longer. When injected into the cheek, Voluma may provide a natural-looking lifting effect that patients love. Unlike years ago when filler injections were simply used to fill in lines and wrinkles, the new era of facial rejuvenation has brought about a shift in focus toward re-shaping and adding volume back to areas that have suffered volume loss. The result is often a long-lasting, softer, natural-appearing and more youthful look for our patients.
