Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Below, please find some common questions that we encounter from other patients considering a cosmetic dermatology or a laser procedure.

Why should I choose the U-M Cosmetic Dermatology & Laser Center (CDLC)?

At the CDLC, all procedures are carried out by board-certified dermatologists with extensive medical knowledge, skill, and experience in cosmetic skin enhancement. Our physicians are personally involved in your care, from understanding your goals, to providing treatment, to follow up. We strive to ensure that you receive the very best patient care in a safe environment every step of the way. For more information, see "Why the CDLC."

Why should I choose a board-certified dermatologist instead of a non-physician to care for my skin?

Our board-certified dermatologists have completed a rigorous accredited dermatology residency training program and have undergone comprehensive training in cosmetic skin and laser treatments. While non-invasive treatments are generally very safe, complications can happen. Studies show that there is a higher risk of complications when aesthetic procedures are performed by non-physicians.

How much is the initial consultation fee and why is it necessary?

The CDLC consultation fee is $95, which includes your confidential evaluation with a board-certified dermatologist and the development of your personalized treatment plan. This first meeting is the beginning of a journey and allows you to establish an invaluable relationship of trust with the CDLC team. You'll discuss your personal appearance goals and how best to achieve them. Your consultation will last as long as needed to fully address your questions and concerns and to lay out various treatment options. At the conclusion of your first consultation with us, you will have a personalized treatment plan, a clear understanding of our recommended procedure(s), and will know how much each will cost.

Will insurance cover my procedure?

Most cosmetic procedures are considered elective and are not not covered by insurance providers. There are some exceptions, however, such as laser therapy for hemangiomas or port wine stain birthmarks. If you think your condition may be covered, please contact your insurance provider and let the CDLC Patient Services Associates know if you require additional assistance in obtaining authorization for coverage by calling (734) 936-4054.

How do I get to the CDLC?
