State Archery Education Coordinator for the State of Michigan

Biography

My name is Dr. Katherine Garland and I currently work in the Marketing and Outreach Division for the State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources as the State Archery Education Coordinator. I administer and oversee three archery programs – the National Archery in Schools Program, Recreational Archery and Explore Bowhunting. I am a certified instructor trainer in archery by the US Olympic governing body – USA Archery. I am also one of approximately 175 Certified Archery Specialists in the world through the National Archery in the Schools Program or NASP. NASP is an international target archery program for students grades 4-12. The program began in 2002 and has had more than 1.1 million students participate in this program. NASP is ran in 47 states, 8 Canadian Provinces, The British Virgin Islands, and New Zealand. Recreational Archery provides archery programs in Parks and Rec and non-profit organizations in local and regional communities, and the Explore Bowhunting program introduces archery through bowhunting and/or demonstrates how to interact with nature. I have been in customer servicing for over 26 years. I previously worked as the state Insurance Regulator of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Prior to my career with the State of Michigan, I worked as a team leader and a quality manager at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Community Development with a minor in Health Services and my Master’s degree in Health Service Administration from Central Michigan University. In 2014, I received my doctorate in Public Health with a concentration in Health Education from Walden University. My husband and I are lifelong residents of Detroit. We have two Jack Russell Terriers that keep us very busy. I am very active with my church and serve on numerous ministries. I also work with the Tri-City Community Development Corp, a non-profit organization providing support including health education in the Southwest Detroit community. When I have spare time, I enjoy reading, bowling, and listening to music.
