Lectures set for seven Distinguished University Professors

Seven faculty members who have received one of the university's top honors will offer Distinguished University Professor lectures about their work starting Thursday.

Recently appointed DUPs typically offer an inaugural lecture during the first or second full year of their appointments.

All lectures will take place in the Rackham Graduate School Amphitheatre from 4-5 p.m. with a reception following from 5-6 p.m. in the Assembly Hall.

The University Record will publish a preview of each lecture.

The DUPs and the dates of their lectures are:

  • Stephen R. Forrest (Thursday), named in 2015 as the Peter A. Franken Distinguished University Professor of Engineering. He also is Paul G. Goebel Professor of Engineering, professor of electrical engineering and computer science, and materials science and engineering, College of Engineering; and professor of physics, LSA.
  • Gilbert S. Omenn (March 28), named in 2015 as the Harold T. Shapiro Distinguished University Professor of Medicine. He also is professor of computational medicine and bioinformatics, internal medicine, and human genetics, Medical School; and professor of public health, School of Public Health.
  • Peter J. Polverini (March 30), named in 2015 as the Jonathan Taft Distinguished University Professor of Dentistry. He also is professor of dentistry, School of Dentistry; and professor of pathology, Medical School.
  • Joel D. Blum (April 11), named in 2015 as the Jerry Keeler Distinguished University Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences. He also is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, John D. MacArthur Professor of Earth and environmental Sciences, professor of earth and environmental sciences, and ecology and evolutionary biology, LSA.
  • Mark E. Newman (Nov. 2), named in 2015 as the Anatol Rapoport Distinguished University Professor of Physics. He also is professor of physics, and complex systems, LSA.
  • Sarah G. Thomason (Nov. 7), named in 2015 as the Bernard Bloch Distinguished University Professor of Linguistics. She also is professor of linguistics, LSA.
  • Robert L. Griess Jr. (Nov. 13), named in 2016 as the John Griggs Thompson Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics. He also is professor of mathematics, LSA.

Distinguished University Professorships, established in 1947, recognize professors for exceptional scholarly or creative achievement, national and international reputation, and superior teaching skills. Each professorship bears a name determined by the appointive professor in consultation with her or his dean.

Recipients receive an annual salary supplement of $5,000 and an annual research supplement of $5,000.
