Residency Program

The University of Michigan Department of Dermatology Residency Program strives to train diverse leaders in dermatology who advance the field through excellent patient care, innovative research endeavors, and commitment to life-long education of themselves and others.

Training resident physicians for the practice of dermatology is a vital part of the U-M Department of Dermatology's mission. Established in 1912 and one of the oldest programs in the nation, our residency program combines the virtues of compassionate care and sound clinical judgment with the technological resources of a major research institution.

U-M Dermatology offers a traditional three-year training program that provides a challenging, dynamic and multifaceted experience in an atmosphere that promotes intellectual stimulation and academic growth.

Our talented faculty are leaders in dermatologic education and research, as well as experts in the care of skin disorders. While completing rotations in our various clinics, residents gain exposure to diverse clinical settings, philosophies and patient populations. At U-M Dermatology, residents discover a caring and supportive environment where teaching and learning is a foremost priority.

Through a National Institutes of Health training grant, opportunities are available for residents seeking research experience in preparation for a career in academic dermatology. These residents do two full years of clinical training as residency; in their PGY-4 year, they are primarily in the lab, but spend two half days per week in the clinic, graduating with their peers and subsequently spending a year as junior faculty.

U-M Dermatology residents join an exceptional program in an exceptional University community. At Michigan, academic training is enhanced not only by the intellectual opportunities available throughout campus, but also through Ann Arbor's diverse and vibrant culture.

We are fortunate to recruit outstanding residents to train with us at the University of Michigan. We work to develop relationships that reach beyond the three-year training period and seek residents who will proudly become part of our incomparable alumni group. Our alumni have made important research discoveries, become chairs of dermatology departments throughout the world, taught generations of students, provided leadership in all major dermatologic organizations, and demonstrated excellence in the care of countless patients in practices worldwide.

Our department is devoted to training world-class dermatologists. If you are committed to excellence in all that you do, we invite you to apply for training at the University of Michigan.

Sincerely,
Yolanda R. Helfrich, MD
