Dr. Timothy Johnson Retires from U-M Dermatology

Many congratulations to Timothy M. Johnson, M.D. upon his retirement from the University of Michigan on September 30, 2020.

Dr. Timothy Johnson received his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He completed a transitional year internship at St. Joseph Hospital in Houston, Texas, his dermatology residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center and his Mohs micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology fellowship at the University of Michigan and the Oregon Health and Science University. In 1990, Dr. Johnson was recruited to the University of Michigan Dermatology as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1996, and to Professor in 2003. He was the inaugural holder of both the William B. Taylor Collegiate Professorship in Dermatology (1999-2005) and the Lewis and Lillian Becker Professorship in Dermatology (2005-2020). Dr. Johnson was the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and the Executive Director of the University of Michigan Medical Group from 2017-2018, during which time he oversaw the opening of the Brighton Center for Specialty Care, among many other institutional clinical initiatives.

During his faculty career at Michigan, Dr. Johnson served numerous departmental leadership roles, including as Medical Director of the Mohs Ambulatory Care Unit, Director of the Multidisciplinary Melanoma Program and Division Chief of Cutaneous Surgery & Oncology. He developed and led one of the top interdisciplinary skin cancer programs in the nation. Dr. Johnson also established an IRB-supported melanoma clinical database and tissue bank at the University of Michigan, which has engendered pioneering discovery, exceptional scholarship, and improved treatment outcomes for patients with skin cancer.

Dr. Johnson’s scholarship includes authorship of over 250 peer-reviewed original articles and more than 60 other publications and book chapters. He has delivered numerous keynote and named lectureships throughout the U.S. and abroad, and has served on the board of directors and executive committees of several national and international organizations that impact dermatology, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Dr. Johnson was an invited founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines Committees for Skin Cancer (1996-2006), and served on the American Joint Committee on Cancer Staging (2006-2017). In recognition of his exceptional work in patient care, Dr. Johnson received the 2002 Dean’s Clinical Award for the Specialist, was inducted as a member of the UMMS League of Clinical Excellence, and was awarded a Presidential Citation from the American Head and Neck Society.

In addition, Dr. Johnson has been an invaluable educator and mentor to an extensive amount of residents, fellows, medical students, and faculty, both within and outside of Dermatology, at Michigan Medicine and throughout the country.

In recognition of his service to the University of Michigan, Dr. Johnson has been appointed of Professor Emeritus of Dermatology, Professor Emeritus of Surgery, and Professor Emeritus of Otolaryngology.
