Clinical Rotations

Fellows will rotate through a wide range of clinical settings. These include inpatient, consultative and ambulatory palliative care services, home hospice, extended care and pediatrics. Fellows also receive an elective rotation and have protected time for scholarly/research activities.

Ambulatory Palliative Care Rotation

  • Site: VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System
  • Goals: Improving knowledge and skills of palliative and end-of-life care in the outpatient setting, working with outpatient clinic interdisciplinary team and providing palliative care consultation
  • Duration: One half-day per week throughout the training year

Hospice Rotation

 
  • Site: Arbor Hospice in Ann Arbor, MI
  • Goals: Working with interdisciplinary hospice team, providing end-of-life care to patients at Arbor Hospice residential facility and to patients receiving home hospice services
  • Site Director: Thomas O'Neil
  • Duration: 2.5 months

University of Michigan Health System Adult Palliative Care Inpatient Consultation Service

 
  • Site: University Hospital South
  • Goals: Providing palliative care consultation to the primary care teams of adult patients regarding goals of care, pain and symptom management, decision-making, care transitions, and end-of-life care
  • Site Director: Phillip Rodgers
  • Duration: 3 months

Pediatric Palliative Care Inpatient Consultation Service

 
  • Site: Mott Children's Hospital
  • Goals: Providing palliative care consultation to the primary care teams of pediatric patients regarding goals of care, pain and symptom management, decision-making, care transitions, and end-of-life care
  • Site Director: Terrence Murphy
  • Duration: 1 month 

VA Palliative Care Consultation Service

 
  • Site: VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System
  • Goals: Being a member of interdisciplinary consult team, improving knowledge and skills in providing palliative and end-of-life care to patients and families in acute care and extended care unit (VA Community Living Center).
  • Site Director: Marcos Montagnini
  • Duration: 4 months

Elective Rotation

  • Site/Faculty: Varies depending on fellow's clinical interests
  • Options: Will depend on the fellow's goals. Elective rotations offered in the following areas: Anesthesia/Pain, Cardiology, Geriatrics, Hematology & Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Liver, Neurology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Psychiatry, Pulmonary
  • Duration: 1 month

Scholarly Project

Fellows are required to develop a scholarly project as part of their training. Each fellow will have protected time to devote to development of their project(s). The subject of the project will depend on the fellow's career goals. Examples include writing a review paper or a case report, participating in a clinical research project or developing educational materials. Each fellow will be assigned to a faculty mentor, and encouraged to prepare abstracts, submit work for publication in peer reviewed journals and for presentations at local, regional and national meetings.
