Since all applications must go through the University of Michigan Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) you must abide by UM internal deadlines. Check with your school or department for internal grant application deadlines.

MEND Division Deadline: 04/01/2022

Internal Medicine Deadline: 04/06/2022

Medical School Deadline: 04/12/2022

ORSP Deadline: 04/19/2022


Before Applying

The applicant must personally establish contact with a Principal Investigator (PI) at the desired Danish partner institution, who will be the applicant’s primary research contact for the duration of the fellowship. This will ensure placement at a hosting institution, should the applicant be selected for granting. The applicant should work with the host PI from the partner institution on the research proposal in the application, further the host PI will need to provide a letter of recommendation stating his/her commitment to hosting the applicant, and endorsement of the research project.

The applicant must also confirm with their home institution through a letter of commitment and recommendation by the home institution.

The application must be completed and submitted using NNF’s online application and grant management system, NORMA, which can be accessed from:

The Foundation will not claim ownership of or rights to any intellectual property generated by the activities the Steno North American Fellowship supports. When all applications have been assessed, applicants will be notified about whether or not they have been awarded a grant. The notification e-mail will be sent from to the e-mail address entered on initial registration.


If Selected

The latest possible start date is December 31, 2023. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, NNF has extended the latest possible start date for the fellowships. 

Upon return, all awardees are expected to submit a report of all their activities and progress while at the Steno.


Please note: the call for Steno North American Fellowships will be open for applications for a second round in 2022. The call will open again on 1 June 2022 and close on 1 September 2022. Each round is a one stage process and applicants can only apply once in 2022.
