Alan Epstein was a Professor of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a pioneer in the study of the neural and endocrine controls of ingestive behavior. He also served as the SSIB's 4th President. The award is given annually to an SSIB member in recognition of a discovery that advances our understanding of ingestive behavior. This award is endowed by the Epstein family, and honors an individual who is less than fifteen years from their most advanced degree. It includes a plaque, a check for $750, and an invitation to speak in the Awards Symposium at the annual meeting.
