The William G. Barsan Collegiate Professorship was officially approved at the June meeting of the Regents. As the founding chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Barsan led us to the forefront of emergency care and mentored many of the current administrative and academic leaders in the field. He continues to lead clinical research efforts, focusing on neurological emergencies and innovative clinical trial design. Through this professorship, we seek to honor Dr. Barsan’s contributions to the department and to his many residents, fellows and colleagues.
Dr. Neumar is pleased to announce the installation of Rebecca M. Cunningham, M.D., as the first William G. Barsan Collegiate Professor of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Cunningham completed her Emergency Medicine Residency at the University of Michigan in 1999, joined the faculty in the Department and was promoted to full Professor in the instructional track in 2014. Her leadership roles have included serving as Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Director to the CDC-funded Michigan Injury Prevention Center, and Associate Vice President Research Health Sciences at the University of Michigan. Most recently, Dr. Cunningham has been named Interim VP for Research at the University of Michigan. Nationally, Dr. Cunningham is recipient of both the ACEP Award for Outstanding Contribution to Research, and the SAEM Excellence in Research Award.
We have set a date to inaugurate this professorship – September 10th at 5.30pm. This will be a ceremony in the A. Alfred Taubman Biomedical Science Research Building. An invitation will be sent out shortly.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Cunningham for receiving this outstanding and well-deserved honor.
