Clinical Ultrasound Fellowship Director -Department of Emergency Medicine

The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a dynamic, innovative faculty member to lead our clinical ultrasound fellowship program, which has been active since 2015. We are seeking an individual with outstanding ultrasound education, administration, organizational and leadership abilities who wants to continue to push the development of the program and pursue an academic career focused on ultrasound education and scholarship.

Qualifications

Candidates must be board certified in Emergency Medicine and eligible for licensure in the State of Michigan. Candidates must have completed a Clinical Ultrasound Fellowship or demonstrated significant contributions to bedside ultrasound via research, education, and administration. Candidates should be able to demonstrate experience with leadership, scholarship, and teaching.

Position Description

The overall goals for this position are to enhance and support the emergency department’s vision of creating the future of emergency care. The ideal candidate will be involved in creating a vision for our ultrasound fellowship to contribute to and further the department’s strategic goals and vision.

Departmental Ultrasound Educational Activities

The Ultrasound Fellowship Director will oversee and support development of trainees within the Ultrasound Fellowship program and the overall ultrasound educational mission. The Fellowship Director will oversee the curriculum design and implementation of educational content to fellows and other advanced ultrasound learners. The Director will also be in charge of recruitment, programmatic and learner evaluation and assessment. The director will coordinate with a robust team of ultrasound educators including assistant and associate fellowship directors, ultrasound educational faculty and the Associate Chief of Ultrasound Education. The Director will also interface with the directors of the other departmental educational programs to assure a unified vision to our department’s core mission.  

In addition to the above, the Director will also support and contribute to the other educational activities of the department, both within and outside the ultrasound division.

Scholarly Activity

The Director will design appropriate methods for evaluating the efficacy of educational content delivered by the Fellowship program and maintain on-going data collection to assure the program continues to provide ultrasound training of the highest quality. The Director will solicit and regularly review feedback on both trainees and the program itself, support the development and writing of grants to support research related to ultrasound, and contribute to medical student, resident, fellow, and faculty ultrasound education and scholarship.

Administration

The Director will a) develop and maintain an annual budget for the Fellowship Program in conjunction with the Fellowship Coordinator, b) coordinate scheduling of fellowship educational activities, c) maintain accurate records and produce an annual report on all fellowship educational activities, and d) maintain relationship with the Senior Associate Chair of Education and other departmental educational leaders.

Simulation Director -Department of Emergency Medicine

The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a dynamic, innovative faculty member to lead our simulation program.   We are seeking an individual with outstanding simulation skills and proven organizational abilities who wants to drive the program to the next level.

Position Description

The overall goals for this position is to enhance and support the emergency department’s vision of creating the future of emergency care. The ideal candidate will be involved in creating a vision for use of simulation to further the department’s strategic goals and vision.

Departmental Simulation-Based Educational Activities

The Director will oversee and support development of course curricula in accordance with current training standards for all levels of trainees. This will be accomplished collaboratively with appropriate departmental leadership:

- Residents – Program Director and Associate Chair for Education
- Medical Students – Clerkship Director and Associate Chair for Education
- Fellows – Fellowship Director and Associate Chair for Education
-Nursing – Director of Nursing
-Interdisciplinary Simulation team training – Directors of Departments/Services that interact with ED including but not limited to Surgical Services and Critical Care
- Faculty - Associate Chair for Education and Department Chair

The Director will also support the expansion of departmental simulation-based activities as deemed appropriate and necessary by departmental leaders, assist in the development of special simulation-based projects (e.g. disaster drills, multi-disciplinary training, introduction of new technology or equipment), and collaborate with faculty and staff throughout the UM medical community on simulation-based activities. The Director will also actively participate in engaging multidisciplinary trainees/learners in the application of newer and advanced technologies such as mixed/augment/virtual reality to train, educate as well as assist in conducting research in this realm.

The Director will provide leadership for the development of simulation activities for regional fellow’s conferences in which we are hosting.

Simulation Center

The Director will develop and maintain working relationships with the staff and Directors of the University of Michigan Clinical Simulation Center and represent the Department of Emergency Medicine as a member of the Clinical Simulation Center Steering Committee.

Faculty Development

The Director will develop and implement simulation instructor training for faculty and residents and maintain a core group of simulation faculty within the Department of Emergency Medicine.  In addition, the simulation director will oversee programs for development and maintenance of faculty procedural skills.

The Director will a) develop and maintain an annual budget for departmental simulation activities, b) coordinate scheduling of departmental simulation activities with the Clinical Simulation Center and other organizations, c) maintain accurate records and produce an annual report on all departmental simulation activities and expenses, d) maintain relationship with the Director of Anatomical Donations Services for procurement of cadaveric tissue for procedural skills laboratories, e) develop relationships with medical and simulation equipment suppliers to gain their support for supplying goods and services for medical training.

Medical Director of Emergency Telemedicine

The University of Michigan Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a dynamic Medical Director of Emergency Telemedicine. This individual will oversee the creation and development of the Emergency Telemedicine program at the University of Michigan.  The role would also partner with the overall health system Telemedicine leadership in the development of tele-access and tele-care across the patients served by the University of Michigan.  With the Department of Emergency Medicine the role will have responsibility for developing content and plans for all telemedicine missions, including use of telemedicine to meet the patients unscheduled emergency care needs, the development of education materials and incorporation of this technology into the training of future emergency care providers and partner with the research leadership and faculty to advance research and scholarship within this domain.

The Medical Director reports to the Chair of Emergency Medicine. 

Purpose

To provide leadership and oversight of all clinical, educational and research related emergency telemedicine activities, and serve as the institutional contact as department leader for program.

Duties

The core purposes of this position are the clinical and administrative oversight of operations of the Emergency Telemedicine program, including establishment and maintenance of systems and processes to ensure sustained Emergency Telemedicine program performance improvement, and delivery of quality care by a well-trained clinical workforce.  The incumbent works closely with the leaders of clinical and administrative service lines to ensure optimization of resources, and delivery of effective and efficient patient care.  Additionally, s/he participates in administrative, management, quality assurance, and other activities, meetings or committees as necessary. 

Clinical and Administrative Duties

  • Oversees and develops Emergency Telemedicine program, including guidance and leadership in patient care, organizational processes and systems.
  • Routinely assesses, implements, and develops Telemedicine processes leading to sustained best practices and improved outcomes.
  • Leads efforts to comply with, meet or exceed goals of Telemedicine program, including its quality management, and staff education initiatives.
  • Analyzes and coordinates improvements to any associated risk management, utilization review, cost analysis, technology implications, and business practices related to the Telehealth program.
  • Provides direct patient care.
  • Oversee the implementation plan of telemedicine clinical and educational services.
  • Assist in coordinating clinical activities with participating specialists, evaluates scopes and other peripheral devices for clinical appropriateness, provides guidance on the potential uses of telemedicine, and outlines the opportunities and limitations of the technology.
  • Responsible for evaluation and research in the areas of equipment utilization, cost-benefit analysis, and clinical efficacy and outcomes.
  • Participate in policy development at the local, state, and federal level.
  • Incorporate telemedicine as a strategy in the area of rural health and affiliation development.
  • Act as liaison to the medical community, providing education regarding the appropriate applications and opportunities provided by telemedicine.

Training & User Support

  • Create guidelines and curriculum for training faculty as well as other telehealth providers including but not limited to nurses, physician assistants, medical trainees
  • Conduct classes and independent training sessions
  • Assess training needs and develop skill-appropriate sessions
  • Prepare for users a comprehensive, clear, and understandable set of instructions describing system processes and user support processes as necessary to maintain and verify system operations.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical documentation of the system for several levels of expertise: general users, system administrators, programmers.
  • Document user questions and develop a log system to track technical problems and develop solutions
  • Respond to phone and videoconference user questions in an organized and productive manner
  • Assist Telemedicine Team members in deployment of multi-media presentations, oftentimes resulting in traveling to remote sites and overtime.

System Development

  • Provide technical assistance to Development Team programmers and/or user analysts
  • Coordinate directly with user management and other Team members during development phases

Physician Assistant

Job Summary   

The University of Michigan Health System, regionally and nationally known for its commitment to providing high quality, family-centered patient care seeks experienced, certified physician assistants for our Emergency Department. The ED is a Level 1 trauma center for adults and children with approximately 105,000 visits per year, providing a fast-paced and exciting work environment. Our physician assistants serve as integral members of a multidisciplinary team providing advanced diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for patients across the continuum of age and acuity in a variety of treatment areas including the Adult Emergency Services, Children's Emergency Services, and the Emergency Critical Care Center. In addition, the ED PA coordinates emergent and urgent care with consultant services, recommends follow-up care, facilitates referrals to various internal and external facilities and participates in multidisciplinary continuous quality improvement and research initiatives.

Required Qualifications* 

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Current ACLS and BLS certification.
  • One year of experience as a Physician Assistant in an emergency setting performing typical emergency procedures including, but not limited: to suturing, lumbar puncture, splinting, wound care, fracture care.
