Biography

Dr. Maio was the founder of the University of Michigan Injury Research Center and a founding PI of the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN), a federally funded multi-site research network focused on pediatric emergency care. He has extensive experience in traumatic injury research with special interest in motor vehicle crash mortality, alcohol and drugs and injury, traumatic brain injury, and rural trauma care. Dr. Maio’s research has spanned from epidemiology to randomized controlled trials. He also served as a co-investigator on a previous Fogarty-funded TRAUMA grant, International Collaborative Alcohol and Injury Research Training Program in Poland. He is a co-investigator on the current MEPI Grant at KATH/KNUST, on which this current grant builds.  He is currently the primary mentor for a U-M M-3, who has a Fogarty Research Scholarship and was the mentor for a U-M EM faculty who recently completed a Fogarty Research Fellowship, both conducted at KATH/KNUST. His work includes extensive experience in issues regarding human subject protections as well as research regulations. He plays a major role in research training of trainees and is responsible for training in RCR.  Dr. Maio also assists in other elements of development of the TBI research network and in developing the RO1 proposal.
