In rankings by Doximity.com released on January 16, the Department’s residency program ranked 8th in the nation and 1st in the Midwest. The residency program at U-M is led by Margaret L. Dobson, M.D., assistant professor and residency program director, along with assistant residency directors, Jean H. Wong, M.D., lecturer, Nell B. Kirst, M.D., lecturer, and Samuel E. Romano, Ph.D., psychologist.
“This ranking is a testament to the quality of our many dedicated faculty educators, skilled clinicians and staff, committed resident physicians, and graduates who act as strong primary care leaders across our community, state and country. We continue to grow and develop in response to an ongoing need for high-quality family medicine and primary care,” said Dr. Dobson.

The new rankings derive from board-certified physicians’ answers to a survey about the best residency programs in their specialty. Each could name up to five. Nearly 3,700 residency programs were mentioned by more than 50,000 physicians. These rankings are launching in time for fourth year medical school students currently in the residency application process who have completed interviews and are beginning to create their rank order list of programs where they wish to train.
“This is a wonderful recognition of the extraordinary faculty and staff who work at Michigan, who bring extensive expertise to the office every single day, as well as to the phenomenal residents we’re honored to be able to train. Ultimately, it’s the people and communities of Michigan and the nation who benefit, and we’re honored to be able to be a good example of Family Medicine for America's Health,” added Philip Zazove, M.D., the George A. Dean Chair of Family Medicine.
Overall the University of Michigan Health System and its Medical School ranked 6th nationally, for excellence across 20 specialties. Read more about additional top-ranked programs at the U-M at http://www.uofmhealth.org/news/archive/201501/u-m-ranked-6-nationally-excellence-training-doctors.
