Remembering Dr. Alvarez

It is with great sorrow that we announce that David Alvarez, D.O., died peacefully last night from advanced prostate cancer, with his family and family physician at the bedside.

David Joel Alvarez, D.O.
David J. Alvarez, D.O.

David graduated from the College of Pharmacy at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN and was a hospital pharmacist at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis before attending medical school at MSU-COM, graduating in 1989. He completed his internship at San Diego Naval Hospital and served in the U.S. Navy as a flight surgeon for three years in Norfolk, VA before joining our department in 1993, first as a family medicine resident then as a sports medicine fellow. David joined our faculty in 1996.  He was married to Pamela Rockwell, D.O., and they have two children – Teddy and Christina.

David was known for being a highly skilled family physician, widely sought after including by many of our faculty and staff. He took care of patients at both Domino’s Farms Family Medicine and Med Sport, as a family physician and primary care sports medicine physician in the orthopedics department. He also served as Team Physician for Eastern Michigan University for many years.

David was friendly, calm in the face of adversity, and always willing to help.  He mentored many of us - students, residents, fellows, and faculty - over the past three decades. We were very lucky to have benefitted from his sage counsel and friendship and will miss him tremendously.

A new fund in honor of David will support the Sports Medicine Fellowship. Gifts can be made at victors.us/davidalvarez
