On January 23, 2018 we celebrated the inauguration of the Kenneth and Judy Betz Family Research Professorship for Food Allergy Research and the installation of Chang H. Kim, Ph.D., as the first Kenneth and Judy Betz Family Research Professor in the University of Michigan Medical School.
The professorship will support innovative research into the causes and potential cures for food allergy and better understanding of this devastating condition. It also serves as an enduring legacy of Kenneth and Judy Betz, a “True Blue” couple whose deep commitment and generosity to Michigan Medicine has been multifaceted and powerful. The Betz’s personal awareness of food allergy, which has touched their family, render this naming most fitting.
Chang Kim is an award winning, world-renowned researcher in the areas of lymphocyte biology and mucosal immunology. Dr. Kim will continue to study the differentiation, migration and effector functions of important immune cell populations and how these immune cells are regulated by vitamins, nuclear receptor ligands, and microbial metabolites. Of his naming as Kenneth and Judy Betz Family Research Professorship for Food Allergy Research, Dr. Kim says, “The position provides energy and motivation to pursue important research in mucosal immunology and food allergy areas. I am so honored to be named the Betz Professor at the center and look forward to working with such excellent colleagues and staff here.”
