FAQ for visiting medical students

What are the opportunities for international medical students to visit UMMS for elective rotations?

UMMS only accepts visiting students from schools that have an institutional agreement with our medical school outlining student exchanges for clinical electives.

I am from a school that has an institutional agreement. How can I arrange a visit?

Each partner institution has a coordinator responsible for student selection. Check with the dean's office at your institution to determine eligibility.  Planning should begin at least 3-6 months prior to the anticipated visit.

What are the prerequisite requirements for international medical students to visit UMMS?

To be considered for a rotation at UMMS, visiting international students must:

  • be from a school which has an institutional agreement with UMMS;
  • be fluent in English, as demonstrated through the TOEFL exam scores or equivalent
  • have completed and passed the following clerkships: General Surgery; Internal Medicine; Obstetrics/Gynecology; Pediatrics; and
  • have completed at least 48 weeks of required clerkships in the same medical school at which they completed their basic science coursework (documented through submission of an official transcript).

Additionally, there are insurance and immunization requirements for those approved to visit for electives.

At what point in the year can I do an elective at UMMS?

Four-week electives happen throughout the year and are contingent on approval by your institution as well as clerkship space availability at UMMS. There is no guarantee of available space at UMMS and/or in the department of your choice.

Once I have approval from my own institution for a visit, what are the next steps in the process?

Your institution will provide your name and contact information to Global REACH and we will reach out with further instructions.

What kind of visa will I need?

The type of visa depends on many factors including the primary focus of the visit and the expected duration. Students accepted for the program will be contacted by UMMS Immigration Support and Compliance to help determine and secure the appropriate documentation.

How do I set up housing?

Visiting students are responsible for the cost of their housing. Global REACH does work with all visiting students to explore available housing options in and around Ann Arbor.
