M3 and M4 Clinical Elective Grants

Global REACH helps many third- and fourth-year medical students spend one of their elective months at a UMMS partner institution overseas. These Elective Grants have supported more than 60 student experiences around the world in the past four years.

Who: UMMS M3 and M4 students

What: Electives can have a clinical or a research focus. Typically, students set up and plan their own electives, although Global REACH can help identify potential opportunities as well. All electives must be approved through the U-M Office of Medical School Education (OMSE), and OMSE must approve the elective prior to applying for Global REACH funding.

Where: Funding is limited to experiences at UMMS partner institutions abroad with active Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreements. See below for the list of more than 20 eligible partner institutions across a dozen countries.

Amount: Awards are given at either $500 or $1500, depending on the partner institution. Find more information and the list of eligible institutions below.

Apply: Apply through M Compass. The application period is rolling and must be completed after OMSE approval (also via M Compass), a minimum of two months prior to planned travel.
