PM&R Professor Helping to Lead Medical Rehabilitation Efforts in Nepal

Andrew J. Haig, MD, is one of several University of Michigan community members who is using his ties to Nepal to offer assistance in post-earthquake efforts. Dr. Haig, who is Professor of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) and the Director of the UMHS e-Health Center, is also the President of the International Rehabilitation Forum (IRF), a nonprofit consortium of more than 50 global universities and leaders dedicated to building medical rehabilitation throughout the world.

The IRF is providing guidance in government response planning as well as raising funds to support the country’s long-term disaster recovery. Dr. Haig and colleagues are also mentoring the only known Nepalese PM&R physician as he provides initial trauma care treatment and works with government officials to develop a sustainable rehabilitation plan.
