UMMS Participants Enjoy 7th Annual CUGH Meetings in San Francisco

Nearly 1500 people participated in the 7th annual meeting of the Consortium for Universities for Global Health (CUGH) held in San Francisco, April 9-11. The attendees included several faculty, staff, and students from across the University of Michigan (UM).

The Medical School (UMMS) and the School of Public Health (SPH) are among the 130+ national and international academic institutions and other organizations that comprise the CUGH membership; each of which is engaged in addressing global health challenges. The theme at the 2016 conference was Bridging to a Sustainable Future in Global Health.

Dr. Joseph Kolars is shown with Dr. Marian Jacobs, Dean of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town

Seven UMMS faculty and students presented at this year's meeting.  In addition to an oral presentation (Networks for Impact on Global Health: Reciprocity, Equitability, and the Sharing of Best Practices) by Dr. Joseph Kolars, Senior Associate Dean for Education and Global Initiatives, 4th year medical student Andrew Gardner presented an overview of his research in Ghana, which explored the use and relationship of alcohol among injured adult patients in Ghanaian emergency departments.  Mr. Gardner's work was funded by a 2014 Fogarty International Research Fellowship.  His CUGH presentation may be viewed here.

A small window into UM's diverse work in global health was evidenced by the nine UM poster presentations.

UM research in Chile, Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, and non-country-specific work explored themes of technology and inovation, emerging global health priorities, human resources and the workforce, and both millenium and sustainable development goals. Two of the posters were presented by UMMS students who participated in a 2015 Global REACH faculty-led small group experience, which focused on improving chronic illness care in Colombia using mobile health tools.

UMMS student Meredith Hickson is shown presenting her poster on the impact of chronic maternal depression on adolescent socio-emotional functioning in a sample of Chilean youth

As in past years, the Medical School hosted an evening social event for UM participants and special guests.  This year's guests included Elsie Kiguil-Malwade (Director of Education and Training, African Centre for Global Health and Social Transformation, Uganda); Hutcha Sriplung (Chief, Thai Cancer Information Network and Prince of Songkla University, Thailand); Marian Jacobs (Dean of Health Sciences Faculty, University of Cape Town, South Africa); and Lemlem Beza (Lecturer in Emergency Medicine at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia).
