Hauslohner Fund Supports Two new Ghana Projects

The Hauslohner Global REACH Fund was established in 2014 by UM Alumnus Dr. Peter Hauslohner and his wife Dr. Marianna Nosa to support community-based public health research and researchers in Africa.

In a joint effort between the Ghana Health Service and Global REACH, three physicians received awards in 2015: Dr. Oheneba Charles Kofi Hagan, University of Cape Coast School of Medical Sciences in Cape Coast, Dr. Opei Kwafo Adarkwa, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, and Dr. Ethel Osei-Tutu, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital in Cape Coast.

For the 2016 round of grants, two projects were awarded from seven grant applications received from junior physicians representing six healthcare facilities. Project period runs from July 1, 2016 - June 1, 2016.

A qualitative study of community perceptions regarding newborn deaths: Lessons from Ghana

Despite the national reduction of newborn deaths in Ghana, the Ashanti region had a higher newborn mortality rate in 2014 than in 2008.  At the same time, mothers who have lost their newborns are often discouraged from mourning the lost baby.  This study seeks to improve our understanding of the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs concerning newborn deaths in both rural and urban areas of the Ashanti region.
