Global Health Symposium in Detroit this fall to feature U-M speaker

Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital this fall will host its third annual Global Health Symposium, an event that will feature a U-M faculty member and promises to draw attendees from hospitals and institutions across the region.

Set to take place Oct. 21, 2016, the 2016 Global Health Symposium will feature international, national and local experts and will focus on building clinical and research capacity at home and abroad. Among the scheduled speakers: Dr. Joseph Kolars, U-M Senior Associate Dean for Education and Global Initiatives, who is set to take part in a panel discussion.

All U-M faculty members and students with an interest in health disparities – on a local or global scale – are encouraged to attend. The annual event typically draws students from Wayne State as well as residents from several Detroit-area hospitals, said Dr. Brent Williams, Director of the U-M Medical School’s Global Health and Disparities Path of Excellence.

“For our U-M students, this is a great venue not only to show their work in poster form, but also to meet others beyond the U-M community who are interested in health disparities,” said Dr. Williams, who sits on an advisory committee for the annual event. “Last year was fun and enlivening, as we got to know folks at neighbor institutions doing good work to address health disparities in the U.S. and around the world. Working in health disparities often means collaborating with one or more partners, so opportunities like this to build relationships are vital.”

The event will include a poster presentation featuring research studies and projects focused on improving health and healthcare delivery among underserved populations. Abstracts are due July 15, 2016 for those wishing to present a poster. For more information about the Symposium and abstract submissions, please contact [email protected] or call (313) 916-2628.
