A key inspiration for me is the Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health initiative led by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), which lists as a central goal (Goal C) “to improve treatments and expand access to effective mental health care.” I use multiple strategies—medication, psychotherapy, biomarkers, education—directed towards multiple targets, namely patient, providers, and systems, to conduct effectiveness trials and simultaneously address multiple determinants of health.
