DHG Software Carpentry Workshop

The UM Department of Human Genetics Software Carpentry Workshop is 2-day-long workshop is designed mostly for novice users who are interested in learning basic programming skills with applications to bioinformatics.

Participants:

The workshop is open to all people in the UM biomedical sciences community.
The workshop is planned for the maximum of 20 people. In case you would get waitlisted please be aware that we may need to prioritize graduate students and postdocs.

Akima George (UM Department of Human Genetics and Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics),  Jamie Estill (UM Health Information Technology Service), and Marc Sze (UM Department of Microbiology and Immunolgy)

Cost:

$20 registration fee

Payments can be made by using UM short codes. 1st year PIBS students are supported by the PIBS Office (please indicate this in your registration form). 

  • Only discretionary short codes can be accepted. Please email the local organizer with related questions.
  • Refund policy: full refunds can be made until August 2nd. No refunds after August 2nd. Please notify the local organizer to process such request and also to allow others to register.
  • The registration fee is used for defraying the costs of refreshments during the breaks.

Transportation:

The UM Blue Bus Service’s North East shuttle the connects the Medical Campus with the NCRC every 30 minutes.

Other important information:

1) Please complete the Pre-Workshop Survey so the instructors can tailor the workshop content to the audience.

2) You will need to bring your own laptop (not a tablet or Chromebook) and need to be able to connect to the M-Wireless Wi-Fi (http://its.umich.edu/computing/wifi-network/wifi).

3) Your laptop needs to run a recent enough operating system to download the required software (OSX 10.6+, Win7+ or Linux). You need administrator privileges on the computer.

4) You are going to need to install the following free software before the workshop. You can do this in advance and we are going to send out an e-mail reminder closer to the workshop.

1. The Unix Shell
2. Text Editor
3. Git
4. Python
