The assembly and function of long-range neural circuits critically depend on the ability of neurons to rapidly respond to local signaling events at distal subcellular domains, including dendritic spines and axonal growth cones. To regulate the precise timing, localization, and abundance of proteins at these remote sites, neurons possess the translation machinery to locally synthesize proteins outside of the soma. I'm working to generate new techniques to investigate these transcripts and proteins found in distal cell compartments of the neuron, and how they impact cortical development.
