Cara graduated with a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences from Colorado State University in 2012. After working as a technician at the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus, she matriculated to the University of Michigan in 2015 for her graduate studies in immunology.
The immune response and nutrient metabolism are two important systems that regulate homeostasis. Although they seem to play disparate roles, studies have shown the two are tightly coupled. They come into immediate contact within adipose tissue and become dysregulated in obese conditions. Tissue both hypertrophies and contains increased populations of immune cells with increased adiposity. This leads to chronic low-grade inflammation, which seems to be the critical link between obesity and insulin resistance, type II diabetes, and fatty liver disease.
Cara’s research aims to understand the role of antigen presentation by adipose tissue macrophages and dendritic cells. This will provide information regarding potential differences in their induction of the adaptive immune response and inflammation.
