Sarah Innes Floral Still Lifes: Oil & Gouache

Sarah Innes' oil and gouache paintings feature bold color, pattern and crisp edges achieved with the use of stencils cut from her drawings. Innes credits her dexterity with an exacto knife and observational skills to her grandfather, Carl E. Badgley, who was head of Orthopedic Surgery at U-M from 1932-1963. When they were fishing together, he shared his delight in the natural world and impressed her with his deft touch with a fishing knife. Innes likes to draw from life daily, be it flowers, people or pets, and use those drawings as the basis for her paintings.
