To apply, submit an application through the Program in Biomedical Sciences (PIBS) at the University of Michigan, specifying an interest in Immunology as your first choice.
Please note that there is is also a departmental-based Microbiology and Immunology graduate program. The Microbiology and Immunology program contains only a subset of the entire Immunology-related faculty on campus and it has different coursework requirements, a teaching requirement and a different seminar series than the inter-departmental Immunology graduate program. Students interested in Immunology-related research can choose either program, but typically, the Microbiology and Immunology graduate students tend to focus on microbial pathogenesis. Most students with an interest in Immunology choose to enter the inter-departmental Immunology graduate program.
The Immunology Program does not have a Master's component. We are a doctoral degree granting program. Should a student have to leave the PhD program in good standing once courses are completed, a Master's degree may be awarded if there is a sufficient body of research to allow a Master's thesis to be written.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree or equivalent with a strong academic record, especially in science courses
- Prior laboratory research experience in a related discipline.

- A completed PIBS application form, statement of purpose, and application processing fee for Rackham School of Graduate Studies.
- Three completed recommendation forms and accompanying letters of recommendation from faculty or research mentors who are familiar with the applicant's academic and/or research performance and potential.

- Each application is evaluated on criteria which reflect the applicant's ability in academic as well as scientific pursuits. All application materials are reviewed by the PIBS Admissions Committee. Selected applicants are invited to visit the Immunology Graduate Program to have an opportunity to meet faculty and students and become familiar with the research and training opportunities.
- GRE scores are no longer required in applications to PIBS.
