Target Audience

This course is directed to gastroenterologists, primary care physicians, surgeons and other health care providers including nurse practitioners, social workers, physician assistants and nurses involved in the management of patients with cirrhosis and advanced liver disease.

Course Objectives

This course is designed to provide an update on recent developments in the management of patients with advanced liver disease including chronic hepatitis C, cirrhosis and complications of portal hypertension. Through a series of overview lectures and case presentations, participants will become familiar with the use of oral antiviral agents for HCV, incidence and impact of opioid misuse and overdose, use of ant-HCV + organs in seronegative recipients, changes to the liver allocation system, and prevention and treatment of acute hepatitis A.

The goal of this course is for the following objectives to be understood and utilized within your practice:

  • When, how and who to treat with chronic HCV infection
  • Risk factors and outcomes with opioid misuse and efforts aimed to primary and secondary prevention
  • Use of serum and urine based biomarkers to detect and diagnose alcoholic liver disease
  • Indications and limitations of MR elastography and MRCP imaging in the evaluation of chronic medical liver diseases
  • Risks factors and management of chronic kidney disease after transplantation
  • Recent changes to liver allocation and MELD prioritization
  • Risk factors for hepatitis A infection and its clinical manifestations

Accreditation & Credit Designation

The University of Michigan Medical School is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The University of Michigan Medical School designates this live activity for a maximum of 6 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

An application has been submitted to The American Osteopathic Association for credits.  Other credits by specialty may apply.

Nurses: The Michigan State Board of Nursing recognizes the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) as an approved provider of continuing medical education for nurses. CME credits awarded at this program may be applied to the 25 hour relicensing requirements, per Rule 2.a., Michigan State Board of Nursing.

Social Work: An application has been submitted for CEs and an approval is pending with the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative.

Transplant Certification: Category I Continuing Education Points for Transplant Certification (CEPTCs) have been applied for through the American Board for Transplant Certification (ABTC).

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 6 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to the ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
