The Office of the Vice President for Research is pleased to invite faculty from Wayne State University as well as faculty from our University Research Corridor partnering institutions, Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, to a special workshop focused on the National Institutes of Health's funding program, MIRA, on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 from 2 to 3:00 p.m. via Zoom. (Zoom information is located at the bottom of this email.) Zhongzhen Nie, Ph.D., branch chief of the Pharmacological and Physiological Sciences Branch in the Division of Pharmacology, Physiology and Biological Chemistry in the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the NIH will be our guest presenter.

MIRA, or Maximizing Investigators' Research Award, provides support for the research in an established investigator's laboratory that fall within the mission of NIGMS. The goal of MIRA for Established Investigators (PAR-19-367) is to increase the efficiency of NIGMS funding by providing investigators with greater stability and flexibility, thereby enhancing scientific productivity and the chances for important breakthroughs. In this talk, Dr. Nie will review application requirements, offer guidance to craft strong applications and answer questions about the program.

About Zhongzhen Nie, Ph.D.

Dr. Zie is branch chief of the Pharmacological and Physiological Sciences (PPS) Branch in the Division of Pharmacology, Physiology and Biological Chemistry in the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health. He administers research grants in ion channels, GAP junctions and structural and functional membrane proteins and lipids. Prior to joining NIGMS, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Urology at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Nie earned a Bachelor of Medicine from Wannan Medical College in China and a Ph.D. in molecular pharmacology from the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, where he also conducted postdoctoral research prior to a research fellowship in the NCI Laboratory of Cellular Oncology.
