Subcortical neuromodulatory regions powerfully regulate seizure-prone cortical and limbic structures, but their role in epilepsy remains largely unknown. We are investigating the contribution of these neuromodulatory networks to seizures acutely, with a long-term goal of identifying novel targets for neurostimulation therapy in epilepsy. We are also evaluating how neuromodulatory networks are modified as a consequence of seizures, which may provide mechanistic insight into the development of chronic comorbidities in epilepsy.
