The Department manages several endowments that provide support for student stipends and tuition expenses. As the traditional sources of funding continue to diminish, these funds are essential for furthering our mission of academic excellence.
Microbiology and Immunology Annual Fund Giving (established in 2022)
The Microbiology and Immunology Annual Fund will be used to meet the greatest needs in the department. This fund will be flexible enough to support a variety of purposes, such as research in any discipline in the department, to fund professional development and travel, to support maintenance contracts on critical equipment, to bring in a relevant speaker or workshop, or to provide refreshments for key meetings or conferences.
Dr. Marc Collett Endowed Fellowship for Discovery Fund (established 2022)
Dr. Collett (B.S. '73, Ph.D. '77) established this fund to provide on-going support of postdoctoral trainees in microbiology, virology, or immunology in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The annual recipient fellow will be conducting novel research that is deemed high-risk/high-reward. MORE INFORMATION
Harry LT Mobley Endowed Lectureship Fund (established 2019)
This fund is to honor the legacy of our past chairman, Dr. Harry Mobley who served the Department for 15 years until 2019. The fund will support invitation of a scientist working in an interdisciplinary area of Microbiology and Immunology to give a lecture each year.
Microbiology and Immunology Endowed Graduate Education Fund (established in 2010)
Income from this will be used to defray the cost of tuition and stipends supporting the most highly qualified graduate students.
Rolf Freter Gift Fund (established in 2009)
This fund honors the memory of Dr. Freter, a long term faculty member in the department who developed a new field focused on intestinal microbiota.
Herbert and Ethel MacNeal Endowed Student Aid Fund (established in 2006)
The funds were given in honor of Ward J. MacNeal (father of Herbert) who was sent to France to do research on "trench fever" during World War I. The funds are to be used for the support of doctoral students in Microbiology and Immunology based on merit and need.
Michigan Infectious Disease International Scholars Fund - MIDIS (established in 2000)
The MIDIS fund provides basic biomedical research training to students who are citizens or residents of disease-endemic nations on par with training afforded to U.S. citizens or permanent resident trainees by the National Institute of Health. More information.
Dr. William Bechtal's Gift in Honor of Dr. R. H. Olsen (established in 1999)
The funds are used to support and/or match funds from The Rackham Graduate School for cultural enrichment for the graduate students (i.e. to attend musical events, operas, plays, etc.).
Ward J. MacNeal Education and Scientific Memorial Trust (established in 1994)
Fund was established to recognize exceptional work of Microbiology and Immunology doctoral students in the last phase of their graduate studies. The income from the trust is used to honor outstanding dissertations by the graduate student(s).
Dr. Clayton Willison and Emma Elizabeth Willison Fund (Willison Lectureship, established in 1994)
The income from funds is used for the benefit of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology for research in the cause, prevention and control of disease and for honorariums for one guest lecture each year in the field of Microbiology and Immunology.
Dr. Frances Wang Chin Endowed Fellowship (established in 1989)
The income from the Chin endowment fund is used to provide full or partial support for a graduate student(s) in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.
William Warner Brockman Memorial Fund (established in 1984)
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology established the distinguished lecture series in honor of Dr. William Brockman. A leader the field of tumor virus biology is invited to present a seminar in each year in Ann Arbor.
Frederick G. Novy Library Fund (established in 1959)
The income from the investment is used to improve the F.G. Novy Library, renovations of the library, the annual purchase of scientific journals, to purchase video projector(s) for seminars, binding of the journals, teaching supplies and other applicable items needed to support the library and teaching of students in the Department.
Frederick G. Novy Fellowship (established in 1937)
The income from the Novy Fellowship endowment fund is used to support advanced graduate students who are fully engaged in research (achieved candidacy) in the Department.
These Funds constitute a gift for endowment and distributions from the Funds shall be made in accordance with the University's then-existing endowment distribution policy. Any surplus distributions from the Funds during any period may be accumulated for later use for the above purposes or may be added to the principal of the Funds, at the University's discretion.
