A very distinguished alumnus of the department, Dr. Nancy Williams Walls, made a generous donation to M&I to establish an Endowed Professorship in her name. The Department of Microbiology & Immunology is very excited to share with you the news that after an extensive vetting process, Dr. Bethany B. Moore has been named the inaugural Nancy Williams Walls, PhD Endowed Professor of Microbiology and Immunology.
In identifying Beth as the award recipient, the search committee noted the breadth and depth of her knowledge in multiple core facets of our department including immunology, virology, bacteriology and microbiome studies, along with the impressive research her group is conducting toward the amelioration of human diseases that are connected to her work. The committee also recognized Beth's extraordinary leadership and service at the national and institutional levels, including most notably her enthusiastic and dedicated stewardship of our department as Interim Chair. Beth's advocacy for fostering diversity, equity and inclusion for the department and all of its members is especially appreciated. The committee also recognizes the exceptional collegiality she has brought to the department along with her efforts to enhance collaboration not only with her group and others but also between groups within M&I. Accordingly, the committee felt that Beth is the most deserving candidate who embodies all of what Dr. Nancy Williams Walls would have envisioned in an awardee who will carry her legacy.
